Sweet Will be the Flower

January 18, 2013

This beautiful poem spoke to me in the moments when I was hurting most.  I pray that God speaks to you through these words wherever you may be.

God moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perfom;
He plants His footsteps in the sea

And rides upon the storm.

Deep in His dark and hidden mines
of never failing skill
He treasures up His bright designs
and works His Sovereign will.

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
the clouds ye so much dread
are big with mercy and shall break
in blessings on your head.

Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
but trust Him for His grace;
behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

His purposes will ripen fast,
unfolding every hour;
the bud may have a bitter taste,
but sweet will be the flower.

Blind unbelief is sure to err
and scan His work in vain;
God is His own interpreter,
and He will make it plain.

    Ka-BAM! Totally one of the greatest poems I’ve EVER read of all time! This section(s) just cinches it for me:
    Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,

    behind a frowning providence
    He hides a smiling face.

    His purposes will ripen fast,
    unfolding every hour;

    William Cowper was an inspiring hymn writer! Having suffered from depression for most of his life, he offers encouraging insights and comforting words. God has certainly blessed us through this man’s pain.

    My favorite :) i struggle with perfectionism and understanding that God’s love is truly unconditional.. that no matter what we do, he still loves us. He may not like what we do sometimes, but he still opens his arms to us and smiles down on us
