Once Upon a Time…

February 12, 2013

Once upon a time there was nothing.  The only thing in exhistance was this person, but wait not a person… something bigger.  Something deeper.  Something powerful.  Something beautiful.  God.  God in His splendor with His Son and Holy Spirit.  He hovered over the waters, flying throughout darkness, and in the midst of silence He spoke, “Let there be light.” And the sun appeared lifting as if a string was pulling it out of mud and showing off its colors and extreme heat.  He smiled and spoke into the silence again, ” Let the waters under Heaven gather together and let dry land appear.” They moved together like strokes of a paintbrush and colors of green, brown, blue, and yellow spread across the land.  He smiled.  He spoke, ” Let the earth produce plants and trees, let light be day and darkness be night, let seasons spring forth- buds on trees and snow in winter, let there be stars, let there be creatures of all kinds in the depths of the waters- a great sea, and let the land bring forth living living animals.  He smiled.  And then something breath taking happened.  What was going through his thoughts?  What made Him look at this creation and think to make more?!  To make us?  He spoke, ” Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”  And so- God brought man out of dust.  But he was not to be alone.  And with you in mind, God breathed life into women.  And here begins the greatest love story ever told.

A story that is connected to us.  This man and this woman who He created out of power and love decide to turn on Him.  Thoughts of what was right in front of them and momentary pleasures became more important than their creator.  And one by one, person after person sin has crept in and has damned us to hell.  We could no longer be with the one who created us because our filth couldn’t be anywhere near Him.  So there we were, living and sinning, and repenting and sacrificing to receive forgiveness and then turning our backs on Him once again.  Left to making an effort after effort to purify ourselves enough to even enter into His presence.  He looked on us and saw that it was hopeless.  We could never be perfect enough to be with Him.  We could never cover our sins and shame.  Something had to be done.  These people that He created for Himself MUST be with Him.  Must know His love and His faithfulness to them even when they turned to other lovers.  There was only one who could save us!  Only one perfect enough to bring us back to Himself and save us from ourselves.  His Son.  His Son must be the ultimate sacrifice.

There we were swimming in a pool of selfishness, of greed, sexual immorality, lust, idolatry, drugs, pain, and a cross that we must die on so that our sin can be paid for while we fall into eternal pain and suffering.  Jesus.  Jesus the Son of our creator comes up to us and with tears in His eyes and love in His heart He takes our cross from off our backs.  A cross that cuts deep.  A cross that is heavier than your current burdens, a cross of redemption.  You watch in shock as He walks away.  You know.  You know what you deserve.  But instead He takes your punishment.  He hangs there dying instead of us.  ALL of our sins resting upon His shoulders.  Why??  Because He loves you.  Because He can’t bare to not have you with Him.  Because He created you for more than earthly romances, He created you for more than whether or not that boy likes you.  He created you for more than a boyfriend.  He created you to experience His love.  And nothing is greater. ” And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.  And three hours later Jesus cried with a loud voice- “My God!…. My God…. why have you forsaken me?.. Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed His last.”- Mark 15  I think about Jesus’ question and in my heart I picture something like this.  God, in all His glory and with the power to stop His Son from dying, looks down on Him and with tears flowing from His eyes and a heart torn by the losing of a Son… He says…” Because my Son.  I am forsaking you because I love them.  Because this is the only way to save them.  I love them too much to leave them.”

I wanted to write on different kinds of love this week.  Eros, Agape, and so on.  I wanted to write on marriage too and maybe that will come in the future.  But as I sat here to type.. this thought came to me- what greater love could I ever think to write about than the gospel?  God is love.  This is what love is all about.  I won’t assume that all of you have heard this before, but I know that most of you have.  But why not hear it again?  Why not be reminded of why we love in the first place?  Why not be reminded of why we are here while we are searching out love in other places?  This may not have been what you were looking for, but may it be the glasses you see through as you love others.  May your love towards that person who takes up so much energy and is so awkward be just as sacrificing and selfless.  May your love towards your parents be filled with forgiveness and humbleness.  May your love towards your beloved be with a heart that serves and selflessly gives regardless of what you want and have recieved.  May the gospel be what teaches you how to love… not the movies, not books, not even us.  We look into other’s eyes hoping to be satisfied, and for moments we find it, but we always end up wanting more.  We can only be completely satisfied by the One who created the longing.  We long for love because we were made out of love for love.  There is nothing wrong with longing for a husband, but its that exact longing that should be pointing you to Christ.  He created that longing… because that longing is to draw you to Him.  He is here ready to show you a love that will satisfy you completely.  And by His grace and Will He can lead you to an earthly beloved to spill out all of the love that you have received from Him.  May all of our relationships point to Jesus.

” We were made for God.  Only by being in some respect like Him, only by being a manifestation of His beauty, loving-kindness, wisdom or goodness, has any earthy beloved excited our love.  It is not that we have loved them too much, but that we did not quite understand what we were loving.  When we see the face of God we shall know that we have always known it.  He has made, sustained and moved moment by moment within, all our earthly experiences of innocent love.  All that was true love in them, was, even on earth, far more His than ours, and ours only because His.  In heaven there will be no anguish and no duty of turning away from our earthly beloveds.  First, because we shall have turned already; from the portraits to the Original, from the rivulets to the Fountain, from the creatures He made lovable to Love Himself!!!!  But secondly, because we shall find them all in Him.  By loving Him more than them we shall love them more than we do now.”- CS Lewis.  phew!  Amen!

We never, ever grow past needing a reminder of the gospel. Ever. Did I mention ever? As we approach Valentine’s Day, which is really painful for some, knowing that I am deeply loved – and deeply known and still loved! – is such a beautiful place to marinate. We all marinate on something, turning it over and over in our minds and trying to figure it out, but Jesus is the only mind marination that brings peace and fulfillment! Thank you for posting!
